Be prepared to see the amazing architectural work. The Chiemsee lake has two main islands: Herrenchiemsee (with the castle from King Ludwig) and Frauenchiemsee. Herrenchiemsee palace was built by King Ludwig II in 1878 and was never completed but was meant to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles in France. Tours of the castle and its extensive grounds on the island are conducted throughout the spring and summer months. Frauenchiemsee, the smaller of the two major islands on Lake Chiemsee houses a Bendedictine nunnery built in 782 and a small village. Upon arrival at Lake Chiemsee, participants may purchase tour packages from the boat pier ticket office.
